Salisbury
Community Park to Host North Carolina Cyclo-Cross
Winter Cup Series Races
Salisbury Parks and Recreation and the
North Carolina (NC) Cyclo-Cross Series will team up at
the Salisbury Community Park to host the NC Cyclo-Cross Winter Cup
Cyclo-Cross series races one and two on Saturday, January 3 and
Sunday, January 4. This is the fifth year NC Cyclo-Cross has chosen
the Salisbury Community Park as a racing venue. Each year the races
grow larger and racers come from all over the country to
participate.
Cyclo-Cross is a steeplechase of
cycling where competitors compete on an approximate one mile course
comprised of grass, gravel trails, a little bit of pavement and some
manmade and natural obstacles. Competitors complete several laps
around the course and are often required to dismount and carry or
run with their bikes to tackle course challenges.
Cyclo-Cross racing is about transitions from one type of surface to
another, from one section to another, from one speed to
another. Races are held in all sorts of weather conditions and are
rarely cancelled. Racers are guaranteed to get a little mud on their
tires and a whole lot of wind in their hair!
Cyclo-Cross is one of the safest
cycling events and one of the fastest growing in the United States.
Races last thirty, forty-five and sixty minutes long with men’s,
women’s and juniors divisions. This year, there will be a children’s
division as well for children ten and younger. All three races are
United States Cycling Federation (USCF) sanctioned events.
Registration and one day licenses for each race are available on
race day and approved helmets are required and must be worn while
racing.
Cyclo-Cross racing is spectacular fun
for all ages and skills levels and is an outstanding recreational
outing for the whole family! Varying fees are assessed for
competitors, but the event is free to spectators. Families, friends
and friendly canine companions are invited to tailgate and
experience an action packed day of Cyclo-Cross racing at the
Salisbury Community Park, 935 Hurley School Road. The Salisbury
Community Park features covered picnic shelters, play structures, an
eight acre fishing lake, more than a mile of paved walking trails
and all terrain cross country trails for visitors to enjoy!
