Touch a Truck Event at City Park Center
March 31, 2007
By: Laura Porter

Laughter echoed across the parking lot at City Park Center on March 31 for the first annual “Touch a Truck”.  Over 200 citizens of Salisbury brought their young children to explore many different types of vehicles. Vehicle operators allowed the youth to climb in, on and through each conveyance to give them a hands-on experience with the functions and importance of each automobile. Fourteen total “trucks” were present including fire trucks (new and old), an ambulance, a garbage truck, an air rescue boat and more. Organizations such as Fire, Police, Rescue Squad/EMS, Sanitation, the Transportation Museum and Army National Guard supported the event by lending a truck or two for the morning. Even McGruff the Crime Dog paid a visit, handing out badges and coloring books to the excited youth. Vivian Koontz, Recreation Programmer at City Park Center plans to run this free event annually for the youth of Salisbury.

If anyone is interested in participating in future events, please contact Vivian Koontz by email or at (704) 638-5295.

March Mania Takes City Park!
March 23
By: Laura Porter

When School is out, City Park is in! During regularly scheduled teacher work days and some holidays, City Park and Miller Center are open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for working parents. On March 23, twelve youth took a trip to Dan Nicholas Park. Vivian Koontz, Recreation Programmer and Laura Porter, Recreation Aide chaperoned the youth to the large structure, where they played until lunch. When they tired themselves on the playground, the group retired to the lake where they enjoyed lunch with the ducks. After eating, the group took a detour to the Hurley Train station where they boarded the Spencer Moose Special for a short ride.

The last stop at Dan Nicholas Park was to play Putt-Putt. After many fun shots everyone piled back into the van to return to City Park where the children colored and completed a Saint Patrick’s Day crossword puzzle. Alex Sirleaf, Recreation Aide, spent the rest of the afternoon with them in the gym at City Park. While music blared to set the pace they played jump the creek and then line soccer. For the last hour the children were given free play which they spent playing basketball or in the computer lab on one of the many educational games.

For more information regarding this program and more like it, contact Vivian Koontz , Recreation Programmer at City Park Center by email or at 704-638-5295.
