& Recreation Annual Tree Lighting & Shopping Spree Spread Holiday

The Salisbury Parks & Recreation Department held its annual City
Park Lake Tree Lighting Ceremony and Shopping Spree on Friday,
December 3, 2004.
Salisbury citizens, ARC Rowan members and children from the Parks &
Recreation Department's After School Program, sang carols and
enjoyed punch and cookies after the lake island tree was lit in
celebration of the holiday season.
Following
the tree lighting, ARC members and After School program children
were treated to a holiday shopping spree. Chippper, the Parks
& Recreation Department's squirrel mascot, was on-hand for FREE
photos and festivities.Talita McCain, Recreation Programmer states,
"This exciting, annual event just seems to put everyone in the
holiday spirit. I enjoy it more and more each year!"
Donated items are price
reasonably so that all shoppers are able to leave with a bag full of
gifts for family and friends. All proceeds from the shopping
spree are donated to the ARC Rowan.

Salisbury
Rowan Sports Hall of Fame
Inducts 7 New Members
May 1, 2004
The
Salisbury Rowan Sports Hall of Fame added seven new members at a
ceremony on Saturday, May 1, 2004 at the Seth Murdock Agricultural
Center. The inductees for 2004 are Gordon Kirkland, Catawba College football
director and athletic director; Clyde Kluttz, major league player,
scout and director of personnel; Charles Lynn, Salisbury High and
Catawba College basketball; Ken Owen, Salisbury High and Georgia
Tech football player; Jay Ritchie, Granite Quarry High basketball
and baseball and major league pitcher; Jack Taylor, Landis
High and Catawba College basketball and baseball standout and
professional baseball pitcher; and Harry Welch, Duke University
football star and outstanding amateur golfer.
Kirkland, Kluttz and Lynn are deceased and were represented by
family members at the ceremony, which featured a program
highlighting moments from inductees' careers, dinner and the
presentation of awards and plaques. The new members join 18 in the Hall of Fame, which was
established in 2001 by the Salisbury Parks & Recreation
Department.
The Salisbury Rowan Sports Hall of Fame honors individuals and/or
teams, living or deceased, who are
native
to, or have worked or performed in Rowan County.
The inductees must be of good character; must have made
significant contributions to the dimension of sports by their
participation and performance; and must have made a positive impact
on sports locally, regionally, nationally or internationally. For more information

Earth
Day Celebration 2004
April 15, 2004
The
Salisbury Parks & Recreation Department sponsored an Earth Day
Celebration on Thursday, April 15th, on the Salisbury Greenway.
From 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., Overton students and the public attended
eight environmental education stations, ranging from animals to
composting. The Earth Day Celebration offered students and
residents the opportunity to learn about the planet and the
environment.
Displays
were: Kristy Cook, Animal Charades; Ranger Ron Anundson, Morrow Mt.
State Park, Reptiles; Jason Walser, LandTrust of North Carolina;
Debbie Lesley, Environmental Education; Carol Hamilton, City of
Salisbury Environmental Water Services; Lawrence Dorsey, Assistant
Biologist of the NC State Wildlife Commission, Fish; Master
Gardeners, Composting; and Doni Pulley, Salisbury Parks &
Recreation, Deer Population.

Annual
Father Daughter Dance Provides Enchanting Night for All
February 7, 2004
The
Salisbury Parks & Recreation Department's Annual Father Daughter
Dance was held Saturday, February 7, 2004 at the Salisbury Civic Center.
The evening event marked the 8th anniversary of the much anticipated
Valentine's Day celebration.
Dads
and daughters enjoyed their special night as little girls became
princesses amid
an array of ball gowns, tiaras, while dancing with that very special
man in their life. Limousines and stretch hummers lined the entrance
as attendees arrived in Cinderella style.
Bill
Hallman, Recreation Coordinator of
the event, noted, "The dance just becomes more and more popular
each year and continues to be a sell-out. Hallman and Recreation
Programmer Paul Moore oversee the dance. Moore states,
"This whole night is awesome. Everyone who comes always
leaves saying what a great time they had."
Attendees
enjoyed refreshments, dancing, DJ entertainment, candy and
door-prize give-aways.

3rd
Annual Wedding Extravaganza Offers Bounty of Information to Brides
January 31, 2004
The
Salisbury Parks & Recreation Department sponsored
the 3rd Annual Wedding Extravaganza on Saturday, January 31, 2004 at the
Salisbury Civic Center.
Brides
and grooms enjoyed meeting with local and area vendors while
visiting booths featuring formal wear, wedding cakes, DJ services,
catering, photography, videography, florists, bridal accessories and
more.
The
event offered live formal wear demonstrations and free give-aways
throughout the day.
Each
year, the annual event draws attendees from across the state and
provides complimentary admission to all brides in support of their
special day.
