Park Avenue Neighborhood

Residents in the Park Avenue Neighborhood are learning that they do have a voice in the future of their neighborhood.  Their vision is far-reaching – to "provide social, economic, recreational, vocational, cultural, and educational opportunities for all stakeholders, from youth to senior citizens, in an environment that is safe, stable, self-sustaining, nurturing and physically inviting." And their vision is finally becoming a reality.

With the Neighborhood Strategic Redevelopment Plan complete, the action teams comprised of residents, business owners, clergy, city staff and other stakeholders, are working hard to accomplish the specific goals stated in the plan.  They have established the Park Avenue Redevelopment Corporation to facilitate the actual business of the group, enabling them to qualify for grants and other economic opportunities.   They have progressed with plans in areas targeted for immediate improvements.   And they have secured funding from Community Development Block Grants and the Robertson Family Foundation for several critical projects.

Some of the successful neighborhood sponsored events this year included a financial planning workshop, a neighborhood tree planting and cookout, a children’s design workshop for Cannon Park, and a Saturday afternoon summer festival in the park.  Two of the larger projects are slated for construction this winter -- the Cannon Park renovation and the clean-up, restoration and pocket park development along Tar Branch.   Both of these projects involve active participation from the neighborhood group during every stage of planning and implementation.  And upon completion of the construction, each participant will not only feel ownership in the project, but will also be vested in its long-term stewardship.

Indeed, in many ways, the Park Avenue Neighborhood Association is working to make a difference in a community where neighbors help neighbors.

Other projects in the Park Avenue neighborhood include the City's purchasing and renovation of a home located 523 North Long Street.  Upon completion of the project, the house will be sold to a first-time home buyer.
