A Desire to rescue a piece of urban land and
create a haven for plants, wildlife, and outdoor enthusiasts began two
decades ago. From its beginning, Elizabeth Holmes Hurley Park has been a
joint venture between public and private interests. In May, 1984, the
Salisbury City Council appropriated money to be used in the development
of a master plan created by Landscape Architect Jane Ritchie. A
dedicated city staff and a devoted volunteer committee continue to work
together to implement this plan. In October, 1985, the James F. Hurley
family made a generous donation to the City in a dedication to their
beloved wife and mother, Elizabeth Holmes Hurley. This generous donation
allowed for an ambitious schedule for the park’s development to begin.
The Hurley Foundation continues to contribute to the park’s development
and maintenance.
Hurley Park is a division of the Public Services Department and is
staffed by 2 full-time employees. The Hurley Park Division is
responsible for the horticultural management of the park including
duties such as, the development of all gardens in the park in accordance
with the master plan, maintenance of these gardens along with other
common areas of the park, urban forest management, and to maintain the
park as a sanctuary for nature. |
