FOG Inspector

Job Duties

 

DEFINITION

 

To provide highly responsible staff assistance to the Environmental Services Manager and FOG Program Coordinator related to the Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) function of the Environmental Services Division of Salisbury-Rowan Utilities.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

 

Receives administrative direction from Environmental Services Manager and FOG Program Coordinator. Exercises no technical supervision.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

Prepare and translate (English / Spanish) FOG program reports as required by the State to maintain compliance.

 

Maintain FOG program files in accordance with State requirements.

 

Develop schedules for inspection of all oil and grease traps or interceptors.

 

Perform basic wet bench lab analyses; prepare analytical standards, QC’s, reagents and solutions, as needed.

 

Under supervision, performs basic chemical and physical analyses for the purpose of wastewater quality assurance.

 

Enter data into database, report any unusual results and make recommendations based on lab data.  

 

Perform Oil and Grease trap inspections.

 

Ensure compliance with safety policies and procedures.

 

Assist in developing, implementing, and reviewing division goals and objectives including those assigned by SRU Management.

 

Assist in developing and implementing policies and procedures for the division in conjunction with SRU Management.

 

Answer questions and provide information to the public, investigate complaints, and take corrective action as necessary.

 

Other duties as requested or required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

            Knowledge of:

           

Water and wastewater laboratory operations and analytical methods including quality control.

 

Salisbury-Rowan Utilities Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and policies.

 

            Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations related to a water/sewer utility

 

Basic fiscal and budgetary functions of a water/sewer utility.

 

 

 

 

 

Ability to:

 

Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.

 

Effectively carry out a variety of activities related to a water/sewer utility.

 

Analyze, interpret, summarize and present administrative and technical information and data in an efficient, effective manner; work with consulting engineers and contractors; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

 

Gain cooperation and consensus through discussion and persuasion.

 

Respond effectively to issues and concerns raised by the City Council, City Management and citizens.

 

Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations, related to a water/sewer utility.

 

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

 

Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

 

Any combination of education, experience and training that provides evidence of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to be successful in performing the duties assigned to the job class.

 

Education: Minimum qualifications require a high school diploma or equivalent.  Desired qualifications include fluency in English and Spanish and graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in Environmental Science, Ecology or a related Natural Science curriculum, plus one year of experience related to the work to be performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
 

Experience: Minimum of one year of experience related to the work to be performed. Desired qualifications include the ability to communicate effectively with the public. Experience in food service or plumbing industry, a municipal pretreatment program, water and wastewater laboratory, or operation of industrial or municipal treatment processes is desired.

 

Training: Evidence of continuing professional development through advanced studies, workshops, seminars and participation in professional organizations.

 

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE

 

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Class “C” North Carolina driver’s license, and residential telephone service. Must be able to obtain any certification required by the State of North Carolina.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Applicant must be in good physical condition. Must also have adequate dexterity to efficiently complete laboratory analyses, operate a computer keyboard, and perform similar tasks. Must be able to walk long distances and perform strenuous outdoor work collecting water and wastewater samples, inspecting grease trap facilities, and lifting manhole covers.
