Salisbury "CLEAN AIR" Project -
BioDiesel |

On
November 16th 2004 the Salisbury “Clean Air” Project met a major goal.
In a joint effort between Steve Jarrett of Superior Oil of Salisbury,
the North Carolina Solar Center and the City of Salisbury, Salisbury
became the first city in the Charlotte Region to sell B-20 Bio-Diesel to
the public. B-20 Bio-Diesel is a soybean based fuel product of the
US farmer. Bio-Diesel produces 12% to 20% less emissions than
regular diesel fuels and lowers the need for imported fuel. The
City of Salisbury committed to be the anchor fleet to help make this
fuel available to other agencies and the public. The City of Salisbury is committed to lowering vehicle emissions having in 2001 voluntarily brought the city’s fleet up to meet the California BAR 97 standards for exhaust emissions. This exceeded the required testing to meet the North Carolina OBD II Emissions testing. Then in December of 2002 the City of Salisbury voluntarily began using Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel (LSDF) in all its off road and construction equipment. Off road diesel fuels account for as much as 55% of all diesel emissions by volume. This requirement to run LSDF in off road equipment recently became law to go into effect in 2010. The City of Salisbury is currently seeking grants to test Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel (ULSD) with 20% Bio-Diesel in its city buses and sanitation trucks. Also on order is a new Hybrid Vehicle for the city’s mail route. This vehicle will serve as a test vehicle to replace the Salisbury Rowan Utility meter reading vehicles. |
