The water relay and the hose fights were more necessary than fun to fight off the high temperatures Saturday during the Rowan Countyannual Firemens Muster. Cars filled the parking lot at Locke Volunteer Fire Department of N.C. 150 as soon as the events began at 9 a.m. The overall winners of the muster events were: Salisbury, first; Atwell, second; and Bostian Heights, third. Firefighters participated in six major events. The first-place winners were as follows: turnout gear race, Atwell; fire tact, Locke; hose lay, Salisbury; water ball fight, Rockwell City; tug-of-war, Atwell; and the bucket brigade, Bostian Heights. This year marks the sixth consecutive tug-of-war victory for Atwell, known to other departments as the Beast. A headache award went to Rockwell City Volunteer Fire Department after a hose lay event mishap. Trucks were also judged for their appearance. The results are as follows: Class One, Locke brush truck 614; Class Two, Locke tanker 623; Class Three, Atwell squad 404; Class Four, Union engine 762; Class Five, Bostian Heights engine 411. Spencer engine 753 won the Judges Award, and Bostian Heights engine 411 was judged Best Overall Truck. Atwell won the T-shirt award for their Beast design. And the Sportsmanship Award went to Locke Volunteer Fire Department. Everyone enjoyed the kids turn-out gear race, when the youths struggled to hold up the firemens jacket and helmets.
