A Salisbury, N.C. Fire Department Captain was among the 107 people injured when an 80-foot section of the 320-foot concrete-and-steel walkway snapped in half and fell onto the highway outside Lowe's Motor Speedway on Saturday night.
Despite his injuries -- which included a broken pelvis and back and wrist injuries -- Kenny Payne was able to help others that were injured, including the most serious, until first responders arrived, according to officials with the Salisbury Fire Department.
"After Payne fell and was injured, he used his rescue technician training and helped several people who were entangled in the remains of fence and handrails," according to Capt. Marshall Moore.
"He provided medical aid to some of the most severely injured until responders arrived and the nausea overcame him due to his injuries."
Several other Salisbury Firefighters were on-hand at the Speedway as a part of the in-track safety crews. they were called outside the track to assist in the triage effort.
Battalion Chief Tom Lowman, Captain David Morris, Engineers M. D. Lancaster and Terry Smith, and Firefighter Chris Lyerly were involved in the initial rescue effort.
The City of Concord Fire Department and County of Cabarrus EMS were in charge of the rescue effort. The City of Charlotte sent a full rescue Box Assignment.
As of Monday afternoon, Payne was at home resting and recovering.
