  Ross Bernard Penley SALISBURY - Ross Bernard Penley, age 79, of Maxwell Street, died Thursday, April 6, 2006, at Rowan Regional Medical Center. Born in Rowan County on Oct. 20, 1926, Mr. Penley was the son of the late Ralph Harkin Penley and Rosa Bell House Penley. Educated in Rowan County schools, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church. Mr. Penley served with the Salisbury Fire Department for a number of years in Rowan County and retired as Deputy Fire Chief. He was a member of the Rowan County Civitan Club, ARC, Rowan Fireman 's Association and the National Fire Chief 's Association. Mr. Penley was preceded in death by sister Elizabeth Roberta Penley and brothers Ralph Harkin Penley Jr. and Curtis Ward Penley. He is survived by his wife, Mary Louise Gales Penley; son Richard Gales "Dick" Penley and wife Nancy of Salisbury; daughter Rosemary Penley Smith and husband Tim of Morrisville; grandchildren Ashley Smith McMillan and husband Jimmy Stuart Smith, Brad, Elizabeth and Lauren Penley; extended family Marc, Peggy, Eric and David Courreges, John, Elizabeth, Marshall and Luke Brady, and Sharli Barlowe and Susie Browne. Visitation : The family will see friends Sunday night from 6-7:30 at Summersett Funeral Home. Service : The funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church. The Rev. Cynthia Mackey, minister, and Dr. Carl Dunker, former minister of the church, will be officiating. Burial will follow in the U.S. National Cemetery, Statesville Boulevard location, with honors provided by the Salisbury Fire Department. Memorials may be made to Coburn Memorial Methodist Church, 901 S. Church Street, Salisbury, NC 28144, or ARC of Rowan County, 1918 W. Innes Street, Salisbury, NC 28144. He was an adored father, son, husband, grandfather, uncle, brother and special father to many (who weren 't his own). With a quiet nature, a gentle spirit and a big heart, he gave unselfishly to others and touched the lives of so many.
