Project Safe

What is SAFE?

The initials for SAFE stand for Safety Assessment For Emergencies

SAFE is for seniors and the disabled population who are living in homes without adequate home security equipment and fire safety appliances. Where the need is identified in a written survey, the project will install:

Smoke Detectors
Carbon Monoxide Detectors
House Address Numbers
Emergency Alert Light Bulb
Dead Bolt Lock
Peepholes in Exterior Doors
Replace Old Batteries in Detectors

What Does it Cost?

All materials are provided by a grant from The Blanche & Julian Robertson Family Foundation Inc. Although recipients of the SAFE Program will not be charged, they will be given an opportunity to make a contribution which will be used to support project expenses.

How Does the Project Work?

If you are a senior or disabled person, and would like to have a home safety assessment, call the Senior Services Department at (704) 636-2344. A representative of the SAFE Committee will visit the home to complete a survey form. After it is determined what is needed, the appropriate City or County Fire Department is notified to install all of the fire safety appliances. A bonded locksmith will receive a referral to install the home security devices. Once approved, the response time for installing devices can be anywhere from two to four weeks. Prior to any of these visits, the resident will be contacted by a phone call to make an appointment time.

Who Provides This Service?

The SAFE Project was conceived by public service agencies and senior representatives who serve on the ARE YOU OK Program Committee that provides a daily telephone safety check. The key participating organizations are:

Rowan County Senior Services Department
Rowan County Department of Telecommunications
Rowan County EMS/Fire Marshal Division
Rowan County Volunteer Fire Departments
Rowan County Sherriff's Department
Salisbury Fire Department
Salisbury Police Department
China Grove Police Department

The Salisbury Fire Department has been providing a similar but limited smoke detector installation program called Project Help since 1984. In 2001 the department partnered with the Rowan County Senior Services Department to provide a more enhanced level of service program called Project Safe.
