Salisbury Fire Department

Intern Program
The City of Salisbury Fire Department is proud to participate in the Rowan-Salisbury High School Internship Program. Such participation allows the fire department to observe future employee applicants and evaluate their potential to be successful as a full-time firefighter and to be a part of the development of our community. Likewise, Interns are able to evaluate the Fire Department as a potential employer and determine if they are interested in full time employment as a firefighter in the future.
Students interested in becoming Fire Department Interns pursue appointment through the following steps:
Gain approval through their respective High School Guidance Office. Guidance officials will determine if the perspective Intern fulfils the role that a fire department intern must have including trustworthiness, punctual, honest and hard working before recommending the interested party to the fire department.
The interested person will then complete an application and agreement that indicates their interest and allows the fire department to conduct background and drivers license checks. The agreement includes statements that the intern agrees to participate in required safety training and other programs to enhance their abilities to "work" within the department.
Fire Department Officials, similar to an employment interview, will interview the perspective intern.
The perspective intern will be assigned/not be assigned based on background checks, interviews, positive recommendations of school officials, space available (the fire department can accept a limited number of interns per year).
The Fire Department will:
Agree to provide a learning environment for the intern through on-going, in-service fire fighter training programs.
Provide required safety training program including: Blood Borne Pathogen Safety, CPR and Basic First Aid awareness, Fire equipment and tools, Intern roles and responsibilities, Personal safety equipment, Station emergencies, Radio communications, Public fire safety education, Blood pressure clinic operations and other related topics.
Periodically evaluate the intern, which may include written and practical testing.
Provide basic safety equipment including gloves and non-structural helmet/hard-hat.
