Captain of Operations, Melonie Thompson, is a 20 year veteran of the law enforcement profession. She is a graduate of McDowell High School in Marion, North Carolina and graduated from Appalachian State University (ASU) with a major in psychology, minor in criminal justice with a concentration in mental health. She later attended Rowan Cabarrus Community College (RCCC) and is fluent in sign language. While attending ASU, she completed her internship with the Salisbury Police Department.
During her tenure with the Salisbury Police Department, Thompson has served in the following capacities as a Patrol Officer, member of the S.A.F.E. Team (Selected Areas for Enforcement - targeting street level drugs and gangs), Patrol Sergeant, Patrol Operations Lieutenant (District Commander - North District), Special Operations Lieutenant (Traffic Unit, K-9 Unit, Special Events, Fleet) and currently services as the Captain of Operations. In addition she was selected at the 1997 Young Officer of the Year by her peers at the Salisbury Police Department.
Thompson currently holds the Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Law Enforcement certifications from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission.
FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION
Duties of the Captain of Operations include management of the department's Traffic Unit, Patrol Division, Police Interdiction Team (PIT), extra duty officers, grant research and issuance of ABC permits, parade and street closure permits and precious metal permits.
