Congestion Mitigation Air Quality (CMAQ)
CMAQ is a federal program designed to assist regions of the county that are in non-attainment of federal air quality standards. The City of Salisbury is located in a qualifying area for CMAQ funds. During summer months, we have 20-30 “air quality action days” where it is not recommended that children or any person with respiratory impairments exert themselves outdoors.
 
CMAQ funds are administered through a competitive grant program and typically pay 80% of the cost of non-traditional transportation-related projects that have a positive impact on air quality. The most common CMAQ projects involve construction of sidewalks, bike lanes, or Greenway trails. However, CMAQ funds have also been used in Rowan County for a Public Education and Outreach Program conducted by the Catawba College Center for the Environment, electrification of 50 spaces at Derrick Truck Stop on I-85, and Transit demonstration projects.
